Oran Park Library and Community Hub is in the heart of the Oran Park master planned precinct and provides a collective space for residents, ignites creativity, inspires learning and brings the community together. The new building is a transparent, open, flexible and welcoming state-of-the- art facility and hub for the community within the new civic precinct.

The project was commissioned by Urban Growth NSW and Camden Council, designed through to tender stage by a team of consultants, including van der Meer, and constructed on a ‘Design and Construct’ contract by ADCO Constructions, with van der Meer retained as the structural engineer for the life of the project.

Van der Meer were engaged to provide structural engineering design services from concept design through to construction, including novation to the head contractor. Specific design areas include piled foundations, post tensioned suspended slabs, off-form feature concrete elements, large span steel framed roofs including complex oblique intersections of the Library and Community Hub structures.

Further services include the design and certification of artworks (including a race car – a reflection of the areas motor racing heritage) suspended from the roof. Throughout the design stage numerous configurations were assessed including space frames and trusses providing a 900m2 clear floor plan in the library with 30m long roof trusses. The oblique junction of the structures two roofs required special attention to not obstruct the architectural vision while delivering an opened plan practical, usable space.
